Your Dog Cannot Choose What Fills the Air. You Can.
Share
You check their food.
You choose their treats carefully.
You worry about what they pick up on walks.
But how often do you think about what they are breathing inside their own home?
The cleaning sprays. The plug-ins. The scented candles. The carpet fresheners. The aerosols. The fragranced laundry products.
Individually, they may seem like ordinary parts of keeping a home clean and pleasant.
But your dog does not experience them individually.
They experience the home you create as a whole.
And new research suggests it is time we paid much closer attention.
The finding dog owners should not ignore
A 2026 peer-reviewed study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science examined exposure to volatile organic compounds, known as VOCs, in 60 Golden Retrievers.
Thirty had been diagnosed with multicentric lymphoma. Thirty were unaffected matched controls.
Every dog tested had detectable metabolites of benzene, xylene and 1,3-butadiene in their urine.
Researchers then tested the effect of benzene and xylene on canine blood cells. At particular concentrations, both chemicals caused measurable DNA damage.
When the researchers estimated the dogs’ blood concentrations, benzene and xylene reached potentially genotoxic levels in most of the dogs studied.
Genotoxic means capable of damaging the genetic material inside a cell.
That should make every dog owner stop and look differently at what is being used inside their home.

Your home may smell clean. But what is creating that smell?
VOC stands for volatile organic compound.
These are carbon-based chemicals that can evaporate into the air. Some produce a noticeable smell. Others may be present without you being able to detect them.
Benzene is a recognised carcinogen. Sources can include tobacco smoke, petrol fumes, vehicle exhaust, paints, glues, adhesives, detergents, cleaning products and industrial pollution.
The uncomfortable truth is that many everyday household products were created to appeal to people.
They were not designed by starting with the dog lying on the floor, sleeping beside the sofa or walking across the freshly treated carpet.
Your dog cannot read the label.
They cannot question vague claims such as “natural” or “pet-friendly”.
They cannot open a window.
They cannot decide that the combination of laundry fragrance, cleaning spray, aerosol deodorant, plug-in and candle has become too much.
They rely entirely on you.
How many fragranced products are operating in your home right now?
Take a look around the room where your dog spends most of their time.
Are you using any of these?
- Plug-in air fresheners
- Scented candles
- Wax melts
- Room or fabric sprays
- Carpet fresheners
- Aerosol toiletries
- Strongly fragranced cleaning products
- Laundry scent boosters
- Fragranced surface products
Now ask yourself a more important question:
Were any of them actually designed with your dog in mind?
A product being sold for use in the home does not automatically mean that the needs of dogs were considered when it was created.
Words such as “natural”, “clean” and “pet-friendly” can sound reassuring, but they do not tell you what has been used, how much you should use or whether your dog should be able to leave the room.
That lack of thought is precisely why Foxy & Ruby exists.
Dog-conscious fragrance begins with the dog
Foxy & Ruby does not take conventional home fragrance and simply add a paw print to the packaging.
Our starting point is different.
We begin with the dog sharing the space.
Our home-fragrance products are made without synthetic fragrance oils. We use deliberately selected essential oils at restrained levels, disclose our ingredients and provide clear instructions for considered use.
We encourage customers to use less, ventilate the room and always allow their dog the freedom to move away.
Because dog-conscious fragrance should never mean filling every room with more scent.
It means choosing one fragrance thoughtfully instead of layering several products without considering the combined environment.
It means understanding what you are using.
It means recognising that a dog’s experience of the home matters just as much as ours.
If you still want a beautiful-smelling home, choose differently
You do not have to choose between loving home fragrance and caring about your dog’s environment.
You do need to stop assuming that every fragranced product deserves a place in your home.
Instead of automatically replacing another plug-in or reaching for another aerosol, choose a product created specifically for a life shared with dogs.

The better home is not the strongest-smelling home
For years, we have been encouraged to spray, plug in, light, melt and layer fragrance until every trace of normal life has been covered.
But stronger does not automatically mean cleaner.
More does not automatically mean better.
And “made for the home” does not mean made with your dog in mind.
The latest research gives dog owners another reason to question what is being released into the places their dogs eat, sleep and spend most of their lives.
You cannot control every environmental exposure.
You can control what you deliberately bring into your home.
Choose fewer products.
Read the ingredients.
Stop layering fragrance.
Ventilate your rooms.
Give your dog the freedom to leave.
And when you choose home fragrance, choose a brand that considered your dog from the very beginning.
Make your next fragrance choice a dog-conscious one
Your dog cannot choose what fills the air.
But you can.
