When a Rescue Dog Comes Home, Every Smell Is New
Share
Foxy in rescue, before she came home to me.
Look at Foxy’s face in this photograph.
This was taken in the rescue before she became part of my family. She was around eight months old, but I knew very little about what those first months of her life had contained.
I did not know what she had heard.
I did not know what she had smelled.
I did not know which hands had been kind or what might have frightened her.
All I knew was that she needed to feel safe.
That is the reality of bringing home many rescue dogs. You can give them a warm bed, good food and all the love in the world, but you cannot ask them to explain what happened before they found you.
You have to learn to see the new home from their point of view.
And that includes thinking about what fills the air around them.
Your home is familiar to you. It may be overwhelming to them.
When a rescue dog first arrives, almost everything is unfamiliar.
New people. New rooms. New routines. New noises. New flooring. New expectations.
And new smells.
Dogs Trust recommends giving a newly adopted dog a quiet place to rest, establishing a routine and allowing them time to adjust. A dog’s safe space should be somewhere they can enter and leave freely. That sense of choice is important, particularly for a dog who may previously have had very little control over what happened to them.
Not every rescue dog will be visibly anxious. Some will explore immediately. Others may hide, freeze, pace, pant, struggle to settle or remain constantly alert.
Some signs of distress are much quieter and easier to miss.
A dog who appears to be lying still may not necessarily feel relaxed. They could simply be trying to understand whether this new place is safe.
That is why the products we use around them matter.
Think about what your rescue dog is walking into
Before your dog arrives, you may clean the floors, wash their bedding and spray the room to make everything smell fresh.
It feels like a loving thing to do.
But in doing so, you could create a confusing mixture of:
- Strongly fragranced floor cleaner
- Carpet freshener
- Laundry scent boosters
- Fabric spray
- Plug-in air fresheners
- Scented candles
- Room sprays
- Aerosol cleaning products
To us, that might smell clean and welcoming.
To a dog with an extraordinary sense of smell, it may be an intense collection of completely unfamiliar scents.
A rescue dog cannot tell you that the fragrance is too strong.
They cannot explain whether a particular smell has an unpleasant association.
They cannot ask you to stop spraying.
They depend on you to notice their response and to make careful choices for them.
“Made for the home” does not mean made with dogs in mind
This is the assumption Foxy & Ruby challenges.
Most conventional home-fragrance products are created for human preferences. Their purpose is to make a room smell stronger, sweeter or fresher to us.
The dog sharing that room may never have been considered.
A paw print, the word “natural” or a vague “pet-friendly” statement does not tell you:
- Which ingredients have been used
- Whether synthetic fragrance oils are present
- How much product you should use
- Whether the room should be ventilated
- Whether your dog needs space to move away
This matters with every dog, but it deserves particular thought when you have welcomed a rescue dog whose history and previous experiences may be unknown.
You cannot remove every new sensation from their life.
You can avoid surrounding them with unnecessary ones.
What does a dog-conscious home look like?
A dog-conscious home does not have to be silent, scentless or perfect.
It is a home in which the dog is included in the decisions.
Start gently
Do not introduce several fragranced products at once.
Allow your dog to become familiar with the natural smell of their new home, their bed, their people and their belongings.
Create a genuine safe space
Give them a quiet area where they can rest undisturbed. Never force them into it, pull them out or use it as a punishment.
Their safe place should always remain their choice.
Keep routines predictable
Regular meals, walks, rest periods and calm interactions can help a dog begin to understand what happens next.
Predictability builds trust.
Watch the dog in front of you
Turning away, leaving the room, pacing, panting, lip licking, hiding or struggling to settle can all warrant attention.
If your dog appears persistently anxious, suddenly behaves differently or you are worried about their health, speak to your vet. They can rule out pain or illness and, where appropriate, refer you to an accredited clinical animal behaviourist.
Question the products you use
Read beyond the front of the label.
Choose transparent products with clear instructions. Avoid automatically layering sprays, plug-ins, candles and cleaning fragrances in the same space.
Use less. Ventilate the room. Let your dog leave.
Foxy is why we do things differently
Foxy & Ruby was not created by taking an ordinary home-fragrance product and putting a dog on the packaging.
It began with Foxy.
Living with her made me question everyday decisions I had previously made entirely from a human point of view.
What could she smell?
What was she breathing?
How did the home feel from her level?
Was a product genuinely created with dogs in mind, or was I simply being reassured by clever marketing?
Those questions became the foundation of Foxy & Ruby.
Our dog-conscious home-fragrance products contain no synthetic fragrance oils. We use deliberately selected essential-oil blends at restrained levels, provide clear usage instructions and encourage thoughtful use.
We recommend ventilation, using one fragrance at a time and always allowing your dog the freedom to move away.
Because caring about a rescue dog should extend beyond the food in their bowl and the bed in the corner.
It should include the environment surrounding them every day.
Begin with control, not clouds of fragrance
For rescue dogs adjusting to a new home, control and consistency matter.
Aroma Stone™ – Settled offers a gentle, controllable alternative to continuous plug-ins, sprays and diffusers.
The reusable stone releases its Settled essential-oil blend passively, without a flame, heat, electricity, water or continuous mist.
You begin with just two drops.
That matters because you stay in control of the amount. You can place the stone thoughtfully, move it easily and stop using it whenever necessary.
It can also help create a consistent, familiar aroma when used as directed. Once your dog is comfortable with it at home, the stone can travel with you to places where the surroundings may change.

Rescue dogs do not need a perfect home
They need a home prepared to listen.
They need patience when progress is slow.
They need people who understand that fear does not always look dramatic and trust cannot be hurried.
Most of all, they need us to think about the things they cannot choose for themselves.
The products we spray.
The surfaces we clean.
The fragrances we release.
The air they breathe.
When Foxy was standing in that rescue, she had no way of knowing what her future home would be like.
She did not know that she would be loved.
She did not know that her experience would inspire a business.
And she certainly did not know that one day, products would be created by asking a simple question:
How will this feel at dog level?
Your rescue dog may never be able to tell you everything they have experienced.
But you can show them, through the choices you make today, that they are safe now.
